Application

KCA Early Career Researcher Travel Grants

KCA continues to support child cancer research by bringing its members together with other doctors and scientists researching and treating child cancer, nationally and internationally. KCA invites applications from early- and mid-career researchers for grants of $3,000 for international travel to attend medical or scientific meetings for the purpose of furthering the researcher’s expertise in the study of child cancer.

Eligibility

This grant is designed to support KCA Members and their research staff who are in the early to mid-stages of their research career (early post-doc to newly independent researcher, and less than 7 years post-doc). The Applicant must be a KCA member or a researcher in a KCA member’s research group. Only presenting authors are eligible to apply.

Applicants must be:

  • Australian citizens, or;
  • Permanent residents currently residing in Australia, or;
  • Temporary residents holding visas currently working at a New South Wales institution.

Note that previous winners of this award are eligible to reapply.

An individual cannot be awarded a KCA Travel Grant more than two times over the TCRC grant funding period 2016-2021.

Application

Applications remain open all year round and will be considered in two funding rounds per calendar year.  Travel must take place after the date of award announcement to be eligible for consideration.

Timelines for this year’s funding rounds are as follows:

Applications must include the following:

  • KCA Early & Mid-Career Researcher Travel Grant Application Form (included at the end of this document).
  • Maximum one-page description about your research project and the research benefit of the travel. You will be scored on the following criteria:
    • How will your research improve the lives of children with cancer?
    • How will your travel assist your research?
    • How will we measure the success of your travel? (e.g., Grants, publications, invitations to speak, standard academic measures)
    • Evidence of intention to present the information from your travel at a local forum.
  • Confirmation and details of your travel:
  • For conferences, symposiums and workshops include where relevant, submitted abstract, invitation to present and copy of registration. If your abstract has not been accepted at time of application, please notify KCA Manager immediately upon receiving confirmation of acceptance. Please note payment will not be made until confirmation of acceptance is submitted to KCA.
  • For lab visits and networking opportunities, please include lab details, invitation to visit and details of the work to be undertaken.
  • If travel funds are received from other sources, please notify KCA immediately;
  • For early career applicants, a short letter of support from your group leader commenting on the research benefits of the travel/visit.
  • Successful applicants must provide a short meeting report (half-page) and photograph, which may be used on our KCA website.

Applications are to be e-mailed as one document in PDF format to admin@kca.org.au using the following naming convention TRAVELGRANT_SURNAME_FIRST NAME.

Please note:

KCA may reject applications that do not meet the above requirements. Incomplete applications will NOT be accepted without prior discussion with the KCA Program Manager or Administration Assistant.

The submission of an application does not confer any entitlement upon the applicant. All grants are made at the total discretion of the KCA Director following application assessment by the KCA Education and Training Sub-Committee based on the eligibility of the applicant, its evaluation of each application, and the availability of funds.

Grant Payment Arrangements:  The successful travel grant applicant will arrange for their travel expense to be charged to their employing institution. KCA will reimburse the employing institution upon being invoiced for the awarded travel grant amount. Invoices to be addressed to Kids Cancer Alliance, Children’s Cancer Institute, Lowy Cancer Research Centre, UNSW and can be emailed to finance@ccia.org.au. Please reference the invoice with “KCA Travel Grant” and applicant’s name.
